Enhanced Intersystem Crossing Traced by Femtosecond UV/Vis and EPR Spectroscopy

Radical moieties attached to diamagnetic chromophores can enhance intersystem crossing transitions in these chromophores. This process produces correlations between the spin systems of the two moieties. Such correlations are of interest in quantum information technology and artificial photosynthesis. In a collaborative study, femtosecond UV/Vis spectroscopy (Peter Gilch’s group, HHU Düsseldorf) and EPR spectroscopy (Sabine Richert’s group, University of Freiburg)  was applied to scrutinize enhanced intersystem crossing in composites consisting of porphyrin chromophores and trityl radicals. The results are summarized in a recent cover feature of Chemistry – A European Journal.
